Quartz Countertops

Quartz countertops are known for both their beauty and durability. As a type of engineered stone, quartz combines both the good looks and robust qualities of regular stone, but adds in the benefits of modern technology. We’ll briefly explain what the technology entails before going into the benefits of choosing a quartz countertop for your kitchen (or bathroom!).

It’s important to note that quartz countertops can be made differently (with different amounts of the real quartz mineral, for example), and sometimes the differences can be slight. But generally, quartz technology includes mixing a binding resin with attractive colors and some amount of the natural quartz mineral. Some quartz countertops consist of quarried sections (or ‘slabs’) of the natural stone mineral. Quartz countertops have some benefits that some natural precious stones don’t have — it’s like receiving the best of both worlds.

How are Quartz Countertops Made?

Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. It’s not a stone in the sense that you can go and find one in the ground, but rather one of the mineral ingredients that makes up a stone. Granite, for example, is a type of stone that consists of a number of minerals, primarily of quartz.

Thus, when it comes to quartz countertops, the quartz inside isn’t 100% natural solid quartz, but rather, a combination of the quartz minerals and a few other additives. Their makeup of quartz depends on the countertop manufacturing process itself. Generally, though, it consists of about 90-95% quartz, as well as a resin binding agent and color additives. Think of quartz countertops as a type of engineered stone.

Quartz is durable because it’s made of a very hard material. It’s so tough, in fact, that its hardness is second only to diamond. The resin fashions the minerals together and hardens the combination with a massive amount of pressure and heat.

If you’re looking for a countertop that’s ultra-durable and is available in a number of different patterns, colors and shades, a quartz countertop might be the right choice for you.

Is a Quartz Countertop right for you?

Determining whether quartz is the right choice for your kitchen or bathroom will depend largely on your style preferences, budget, how important durability is to you, and how your take on balancing the overall pros and cons.

Here are some of the points you should consider when thinking about purchasing a quartz countertop:

  • If you like the natural but varied stone patterning in countertops, quartz should be a top contender.
  • If you want your countertop to have a high durability.
  • If you’re not particularly looking for a countertop with 100% natural stone mineral (i.e., you don’t mind a few additives).
  • If choosing from a wide array of colors and shades is important to you.
